Operation Florian - Fire Appliances UK to Macedonia

Easily overlooked, one of the smallest yet one of the most used pieces of equipment that we ship out to Macedonia with each fire appliance donated is an adaptor to connect Macedonian hose to the UK fire Engine; without this small piece of equipment the operational running of the appliance could be severely restricted.

When I first became involved in taking donated fire engines to Macedonia I realised that there could be a problem replenishing the tank with water both during and after incidents. The problem arises due to the fact that we use different couplings in the UK to those used in Macedonia. I thought it would be of great benefit to have an adaptor, 'Instantaneous (UK type)' to 'Stortz (MK type)', but where do you get such an item.

I took on the task of acquiring a suitable adaptor only to find that the part is not readily available and would need to be assembled as a special order. Working as a Salford fire-fighter I knew of a local engineering company 'William Eagles - Fire Engineering'. Some years ago, after a long night shift, I chanced calling in at William Eagles only to find that they don't stock a suitable adaptor... but wait... we can make you one; ever since we have been grateful to receive the adaptors courtesy of William Eagles.

In the present financial climate securing donations and equipment for the charity can be difficult but again this year I approached William Eagles asking if they were able to provide the UK/Macedonian adaptor and pictured alongside this article is Bernie Lees (Transport Manager, Operation Florian) receiving one of the invaluable adaptors from Paul Higginbottom (Sales Engineer, William Eagles). Gary Higson MIFireE (Team member of Operation Florian Macedonian project). William Eagles have been kindly donating
